Professor Kallus, your investigations have revealed that stressed patients take longer to recover. But surely every patient is very nervous before surgery?
The level of stress that we investigated was different to the one a patient normally experiences before surgery. Natural nervousness is normal. We looked more at a type of chronic stress state. This condition is characterised by the fact that the patient has been very stressed for a long time and that their physical and mental reserves have become depleted.

At the current exchange rate this is 0.9% behind the previous year, however in exchange rate adjusted terms this corresponds to an actual growth of 4.7 %. Despite the economic crisis Mathys is creating 47 new positions and is expanding into the Asian market..

The Bettlach family business Mathys registers a growth in turnover of 17.2% in 2008.

This sales growth positions the company clearly ahead of the average for the orthopaedic sector. The number of employees has also increased: 10% in Switzerland and 7% worldwide.

In collaboration with the Maurice E. Müller Research Center for Orthopedic Surgery of the University of Bern, a pressure sensor was developed which measures the medial and lateral compartment pressure of the knee joint during prosthetic implantation. The aim of the procedure: quantification of soft tissue balancing.

The Swiss orthopaedics producer Mathys buys for Euro 1.2 Mio. a technology patent for the fabrication of an improved polyethylene from the Swedish company Bone Support AB enterprise. This technology allows Mathys to develop a second generation of the so-called crosslinked polyethylene (XLPE) and to strongly improve the long-term results of orthopaedic implants.

This has changed. Today new models for prostheses, instruments and the corresponding know-how among surgeons makes it possible to implant artificial hip joints using minimally invasive techniques. Prof. Dr. Werner Siebert, Medical Director of the Orthopaedic Clinic in Kassel, has given us some expert information on the new surgery techniques and implants, as well as the advantages for patients.
