expanSys – More than a simple expansion cup
expanSys enables a safe surgical procedure and facilitates a uniquely easy intraoperative reduction in case of need: by recompressing the shell and protecting the prepared acetabulum. The innovative rib design makes it possible.
Perfect alignment and double protection of the primary stability:
that's expanSys!
Primary stability
The expansion effect allows achieving primary mechanical stability, which is guaranteed by the penetration of the anchoring ribs into the avived bone bed. The design and the alignment of the anchoring ribs ensure complete filling of the bone volume displaced by the expansion. The press-fit effect and the anchoring of the ribs doubly protect the primary stability.
Harmonious force transmission between the acetabulum and the implant
![]() expanSys shell |
The follow-ups of pelvic preparations have shown a well-remodelled acetabulum and backed up the benefits of elastic cups.
The shell is made of titanium (Ti6Al7Nb according to ISO 5832-11). The corundum-blasted surface ensures a rapid and stable ongrowth of the osseous substance.
Perfect alignment and easy surgical technique

The instruments were focussed on the proven surgical procedure for the implantation of press-fit cups and were narrowed down to the necessary essentials. The surgical technique is based on the use of two patented main instruments:
![]() | The positioner to compress and implant the shell |
![]() | The coupling handle to expand the shell and position the desired inlay |
The compressed shell can be positioned easily in the acetabulum, and the desired inclination and anteversion can be obtained without premature anchoring of the ribs. Recompressing the shell permits to correct the position of the shell.
Indications
Basically, the use of an expanSys cup is indicated in all cases in which the bone quality and the morphology enable safe and lasting mechanical primary stability.
Possible indications:
- Primary or secondary coxarthrosis
- Post-traumatic coxarthrosis
- Osteonecrosis with arthritic changes of the head and acetabulum
- Coxarthrosis in mild osteoporosis
- Mild hip dysplasia with restoration of the physiological centre of rotation
- Moderately severe dysplasia
- Secondary surgery following early loosening with no large bone defects
