The solution formula of evidence-based medicine in the fi eld of surgical joint replacement seems simple: arthroplasty registers. In practice, however, such registers are stil in their infancy in many countries and the Scandinavian models are viewed with envy.

But what do such registers really achieve? And what conditions must they follow? Dr Gerold Labek, EFORT-Coordinator of the European Arthroplasty Register (EAR), gives some answers.
